Live sound software for macOS

Your plugins on stage. 360° in-ear mixes. Your console, extended.

Shadow Rack runs your VST3 and AU plugins live, laid out like the channels of a console - no clicks when you change things, and back in seconds if a plugin crashes. Add 3D in-ear mixes your musicians run from their phones - and with the WING Extension, your Behringer WING drives the whole system.

Shadow Rack FX

Your plugins, on stage.

A plugin host that looks like a console: channels, inserts, sends and meters. Hook it up to your desk over USB (or any interface) and mix with the plugins you know from the studio.

Shadow Rack - MIXER
Shadow Rack's mixer: a band's channels with their plugin inserts, New York buses, an FX return and the PA

Every channel and every insert at a glance

Scribble strips, inserts, sends and meters - just like on your desk. Mono and stereo channels, buses, mains, and New York buses in their own section.

  • Drag plugins between channels (hold Alt to copy)
  • Cmd+T: type a plugin's name, press Enter
  • Colours and icons - type "Kick", get the kick icon
01 / CHANNEL

The whole channel on one screen

Open a channel and you see all its plugins in order - each with a preview, its latency and its CPU load. Right next to them, the window of the plugin you picked, scaled up to fill the screen.

  • DELAY and CPU on every plugin
  • Plugin windows fitted to your screen - even the ones that can't resize
  • NY SEND straight from the chain
02 / CLICK-FREE

Change whatever you want, mid-song

Add, remove, move or bypass plugins while the band plays. Each of these fades in smoothly over 12 ms - no click. Bypass switches to a dry signal delayed exactly like the plugin, so nothing jumps in time or phase.

  • Lookahead plugins only come in once they have fresh audio
  • NaN or a sudden +24 dB burst: muted in the same block
  • BYPASS ALL - the panic key
03 / CRASH RECOVERY

Plugin crashed? You're back in seconds.

When a plugin crashes, Shadow Rack restarts in a few seconds with the same session it had before. The plugin that caused it is switched off straight away, so it can't happen again. With the WING Extension, the channels play straight from the desk in the meantime.

  • If a plugin hangs for 4 seconds, the rack treats it as a crash
  • The session saves itself 1.5 s after every change
  • USB cable out? The rack waits for your interface to come back - sound never goes to the Mac's speakers
04 / LATENCY

Latency and CPU headroom at a glance

You see exactly how much the Mac adds, how long the whole loop through the desk takes, which channel is the slowest and whether there were dropouts. If the CPU has room to spare, it tells you how far you can bring the buffer down.

  • One click: recommended live settings (48 kHz, 64)
  • Parallel paths lined up to the sample
  • Mains in one group play perfectly in time

Shadow Rack IEM

Every musician in their own 3D mix.

Every musician hears the band placed around their head - using HRTFs measured on a real human head. It's easier to hear yourself, so the stage can be quieter. Musicians set their own mix from their phones, and you never leave the desk.

RAW

Runs in its own process: if the rack stops, the in-ears switch to the raw inputs at once.

How you mix a musician's in-ears

Everyone on one screen, one click into a mix, and the bass dragged to where the singer can hear it.

MUSICIANS
Six musicians' mixes side by side, each with its own 3D picture, mode, room and level

Everybody's mix at a glance

All your musicians on one screen - for each one you see how their band is placed, which mode they listen in and their level. Click a musician and you're in their mix.

  • 3D, stereo or mono per musician, with a room control
  • Each with their own output pair, on any interface
  • Solo, mute and master - on the desk and on the phone
MIX - Vox Lead
One musician's mix: the band around the head, the levels below, the selected source's direction and height

Place the band around the musician

Drag each source to where it stands on stage - or wherever it's easiest to hear. Closer is louder; higher lifts it above the rest.

  • Direction, distance and height per source
  • Move stereo sources as one, spread them with a second finger
  • A level fader for every source, right under the scene
A musician's code: scan it with the phone's camera

Their mix on their phone

Each musician gets a code. They scan it with the camera and their own mix opens in the browser - nothing to install, nothing to log in to.

  • Any phone on the same network as the Mac
  • Levels, solo, mute and the 3D scene - all on the phone
  • A new link at any time, if the phone ends up with someone else
Picking a source from the interface's inputs, named and coloured like the rack's channels

Sources from the rack or the interface

Take the rack's channels after their plugins, or any input on the interface - a talkback mic, an ambience pair. Names and colours match the rack.

  • Mono or stereo inputs
  • Works on its own Mac with any interface
  • Or next to Rack FX, on the same Mac
WING Extension

Rack IEM on a WING

With the WING Extension, the in-ears work hand in hand with the desk: they hear any desk channel, the mixes leave straight through the desk's outputs - and if the in-ear engine ever stops, the WING keeps the musicians going.

SOURCES - with a WING
The in-ears' sources on a WING: the rack's channels, and the desk's channels that don't go through the rack

Any desk channel in the in-ears

Channels that don't go through the rack are right there, straight from the desk: one click and they're in the in-ears, raw - the WING sends them to the Mac over USB by itself. Put one through the rack later and the in-ears switch to it after its plugins.

  • Names, colours and icons from the desk
  • Rack channels before or after their plugins
  • Nothing to patch by hand
Picking a musician's output on the WING: LOCAL, AUX, AES50 A-C, AES/EBU - who is on each pair - and the bus they hear if the in-ear engine is gone

Mixes out of the desk's outputs

Pick where each musician's mix leaves the desk - LOCAL, AUX, AES50 A, B, C or AES/EBU. Shadow Rack routes the USB return to that output and names it after the musician, in their colour. Repatch it at the desk and the app follows.

  • Every musician's output right on their strip
  • Taken outputs show who's on them
  • Change it at the desk - the app follows

If the in-ear engine stops, the WING takes over

Give every musician a backup: a bus on the desk, picked right next to their output. If the in-ear engine is gone for more than 1.5 seconds, their output switches to that bus on the WING - they keep hearing the band - and switches back once the engine returns.

      Questions

      Before the soundcheck.

Which Macs does it run on?

Apple Silicon Macs (M1 and newer) with macOS 12 Monterey or later.

Do I need a Behringer WING?

No. Rack FX and Rack IEM work with any Core Audio interface and any MIDI controller - the same way on each. The WING Extension is everything that switches on when the interface is a WING on the network: routing, names and colours, the desk's custom controls, SEL, the safety switch, the speaker limiter and the in-ears from the desk.

      Which plugins work?

The VST3 and Audio Unit plugins you already own. You add the ones you want; each one is tested in a separate process before it gets into the rack, so a broken one never reaches your show.

What happens if a plugin crashes during the show?

Shadow Rack restarts by itself within seconds with exactly the same session, and switches off the plugin that caused the crash so it can't happen again. With the WING Extension, the channels play straight from the desk in the meantime. The in-ears (Rack IEM) run separately and switch to the raw inputs at once.

Do the musicians need an app?

No. Each musician scans their code with the phone's camera and their mix opens in the browser. The phone only controls the mix - the sound goes to their in-ears through your interface and transmitters as usual.

Can Rack IEM run without Rack FX?

Yes - on its own Mac (say, at the monitor desk) with any interface, or next to Rack FX on the same Mac, where it can take the rack's channels after their plugins.

      How does the licence work?

One licence, three Macs, yours for good. You activate each Mac once - online, or with a file for a Mac that never sees the internet. It never checks anything in the middle of a show.

      What's in the trial?

Everything, for 30 days. Use it on a real show before you decide.

      Can I get a refund?

The trial is the full product, so try first. A licence is digital content delivered at once - you confirm at checkout that the 14-day withdrawal doesn't apply once it's delivered. If it doesn't work as described, write to us and we'll make it right.

      Windows?

Not yet. Shadow Rack is made for macOS first.

      The show must go on.

Try the whole system on your next show - free for 30 days.
